Studying food partitioning of mammalian predators is important for understanding trophic structures and interactions between coexisting carnivore species. This is particularly pertinent in the light of expanding ranges of populations of generalist species whose habitat and diet overlap with more specialized species. Here, we tested the resource partitioning hypothesis in terrestrial carnivores, predicting that trophic niche breadth and overlap relate positively to body mass. We used dietary data from 18 terrestrial carnivore taxa in four families (Canidae, Mustelidae, Felidae and Ursidae; body mass 0.1–173.6 kg) in three regions in Central and Eastern Europe, i.e. deciduous forest and forest-steppe region (DFR), temperate deciduous and mixed forest region (MFR) and transitory mixed forest regions (TFR). We ranked carnivores along an axis of trophic niche (breadth and overlap), and analysed the relationship between trophic niche and body mass (or pair-wise difference in body mass). A hierarchical cluster analysis of diet composition divided carnivores into four ecological groups: wild ungulate predators; small-mammal predators; amphibians and small mammal predators and omnivores. The relationship between body mass of predators and both trophic niche breadth and trophic niche overlap were hump-shaped. The trophic niche breadth to body mass ratio was significantly lower in DFR than in TFR and trophic niche overlap was significantly higher in DFR than in MFR and TFR. The predominant food resource is small mammals whose abundance is related to local agricultural and forestry management practices. Modifications of management techniques can affect population dynamics and community composition of carnivore species, especially in the case of small-mammal predators.  相似文献

Larvae of the genus Silba Macquart, 1875 were obtained from the syconia of three different species of Ficus growing on the southern islands of Japan and Taiwan. Examination of the emerged adults identified four species, two of which are described as new to science: Silba erecta MacGowan and Arimoto sp. nov. and Silba thunbergii MacGowan and Arimoto sp. nov. Of the four species observed, the larvae of S. erecta, Silba ishigaki MacGowan and Okamoto, 2013 and S. thunbergii feed on the tissue of the fig syconia. Silba inubiwa MacGowan and Okamoto, 2013 was observed as a predator of three fig wasp species. The biogeographic distribution and biological data are provided for each of these fig-associated species.  相似文献

The interaction between hunting interests and legally protected predators is often a contentious conservation problem, requiring detailed understanding of predator responses to game management. This issue was addressed in southern Portugal in a treatment-control natural experiment, whereby the abundances of small game, corvids, birds of prey and carnivores were compared in 12 game estates (>500 ha) and 12 matching areas with similar sizes and land uses but no game management. European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), Iberian hares (Lepus granatensis) and, less so, red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa) were far more numerous in game estates than elsewhere. Among legally controlled species, there were less Eurasian jays (Garrulus glandarius) but more red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in game estates, though the latter were primary targets of predator culling. Fox abundance within game estates varied inversely with an index of management intensity (density of small game feeding sites) and increased along with hare abundance. As for protected species, only common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) and genets (Genetta genetta) were fewer in game estates. The abundance of raptors within game estates varied inversely with gamekeeper density, whereas that of common buzzards (Buteo buteo) increased along with rabbit abundance. Overall, there was little evidence that game management reduced local predator abundances, except in the most intensively managed estates. Game estates provided concentrations of prey that was scarce elsewhere, which may have favoured increased abundances of some predators. Further investigations are needed to find out whether high prey densities may attract predators to game estates with increased mortality risk, which may thus become population sinks for protected species.  相似文献

This article investigates the impact of predation on the coexistence and competitive exclusion of pathogen strains in the prey. Two types of predator are considered—a generalist and a specialist. For each type of predator, we assume that the predator can discriminate among susceptible and infected with each strain prey. The two strains will competitively exclude each other in the absence of predation with the strain with the larger reproduction number persisting. If a generalist predator preys discriminantly and the disease is fatal, then depending on the predation level, a switch in the dominant pathogen may occur. Thus, for some predation levels, the first strain may persist while for other predation levels the second strain may persist. Furthermore, a specialist predator preying discriminantly may mediate the coexistence of the two strains. Although in most cases increasing predation reduces the disease load in the prey, when predation leads to coexistence, it may also lead to increase in the disease load.  相似文献

Similarly, Delphastus species in commercial insectary cultures are probably D. catalinae and not D. pusillus. Summary In a series of laboratory experiments we examined the hypothesis that larvae of stream mayflies would respond to the presence of two different types of predators in such a way as to minimize their risk of being consumed by each. Positioning of larvae (whether they frequent the top, sides, or bottom of stones) of Baetis tricaudatus and Ephemerella subvaria was altered by the presence of predaceous stoneflies (Agnetina capitata) with a larger proportion of the population occurring on the upper surfaces, where the probability of encountering the predator was lowest. The presence of a benthivorous fish (Cottus bairdi) had no significant effects on positioning of the mayfly larvae. Lack of fish effects may reflect an inability of the mayflies to detect or respond to sculpins, or alternately may indicate that sculpins do not normally present a important predation risk for these mayflies. Failure of mayfly prey to account for fish predators when responding to the presence of stoneflies appcars to explain facilitation previously observed between stoneflies and sculpins.  相似文献

Summary Dragonfly larvae (Odonata: Anisoptera) are often abundant in shallow freshwater habitats and frequently co-occur with predatory fish, but there is evidence that they are underutilized as prey. This suggests that species which successfully coexist with fish may exhibit behaviors that minimize their risk of predation. I conducted field and laboratory experiments to determine whether: 1) dragonfly larvae actively avoid fish, 2) microhabitat use and foraging success of larvae are sensitive to predation risk, and 3) vulnerability of larvae is correlated with microhabitat use. I experimentally manipulated the presence of adult bluegills (Lepomis macrochirus) in defaunated patches of littoral substrate in a small pond to test whether colonizing dragonfly larvae would avoid patches containing fish. The two dominant anisopteran species, Tetragoneuria cynosura and Ladona deplanata (Odonata: Libellulidae), both strongly avoided colonizing patches where adult bluegills were present. Laboratory experiments examined the effects of diel period and bluegills on microhabitat use and foraging success, using Tetragoneuria, Ladona and confamilial Sympetrum semicictum, found in a nearby fishless pond. Tetragoneuria and Ladona generally occupied microhabitats offering cover, whereas Sympetrum usually occupied exposed locations. Bluegills induced increased use of cover in all three species, and use of cover also tended to be higher during the day than at night. Bluegills depressed foraging in Tetragoneuria and to a lesser extent in Ladona, but foraging in Sympetrum appeared unaffected. Other laboratory experiments indicated that Sympetrum were generally more vulnerable than Tetragoneuria or Ladona to bluegill predation, and that vulnerability was positively correlated with use of exposed microhabitats. Both fixed (generally low use of exposed microhabitats, diel microhabitat shifts) and reactive (predator avoidance, predator-sensitive microhabitat shifts) behavioral responses appear to reduce risk of predation in dragonfly larvae. Evidence indicates that vulnerability probably varies widely among species and even among instars within species, and suggests that spatial distributions of relatively vulnerable species may be limited by their inability to avoid predation.  相似文献

Summary Damselfly larvae may autotomize and regenerate any of their 3 caudal lamellae. At least one missing or regenerating lamella was evident in 50.1% of field collected Ischnura posita larvae. Lamellae loss during molting is very infrequent (1 out of 117 recorded molts). Laboratory trials indicate that conspecifics remove lamellae and that this process is density dependent. The percentage of larvae losing lamellae during 24 h trials ranged from 73.5 at the highest density tested to 17.3 at the lowest density. I. posita larvae are cannibalistic. The presence of lamellae reduces an individual's chance of being cannibalized. More than twice as many final instar lamellae-less larvae were cannibalized during 24 h trials than analogous individuals having 3 lamellae at experimental initiation. Costs are also associated with lamellae autotomy. 1) Although individuals without lamellae can swim they are more reluctant to release from a wooden stalk and swim when threatened (9% release) than are larvae with lamellae (29% release). Since swimming is part of their repertoire of anti-predator behaviors this behavioral shift should be detrimental. 2) Caudal lamellae function in O2 uptake. Trials were conducted with larvae having and not having lamellae in an experimental horizontal oxygen gradient system. Relative to larvae without lamellae, those with lamellae preferred deeper depths at PO2 values greater than 70 torr. Many lamellae-less larvae distributed themselves at the water surface throughout the range of PO2 values tested. Differential depth distribution between larvae with and without lamellae is highly significant (P < 0.01).  相似文献
